Sporting career
At 192 cm and 84 kg, Edward Skorek played for Lechia Tomaszów Mazowiecki, AZS AWF Warszawa and Legia Warszawa in 1963/64-1974/75. Prior to the start of the 1975/76 season, he was transferred to Italy.
Edward Skorek helped secure four titles of Polish national champion with AZS AWF Warszawa (1965, 1966) and Legia (1969, 1970), winning silver and bronze twice – in 1967 (AZS AWF Warszawa) and 1971 (Legia Warszawa) and in 1968 and 1973 (Legia Warszawa), respectively.
Dubbed ‘the Sabre’ by his teammates, he played on the national team 284 times (1964–1976).
He participated in the Olympic Games three times (Mexico City 1968, Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976).
He was the captain of the team which won the World Championship in Mexico (1974) and secured the gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.
Edward Skorek also won the bronze medal at the European Championship in Istanbul (1967) and competed twice in the World Cup games in Łódź (1965) and Prague (1973), both times securing the second place.
Coaching career
In 1976, Edward Skorek left the Polish national team to play in the Italian league, where the club he coached, Panini Modena, secured the title of Italian Champion. He then coached men’s national teams in Poland (1990–1991) and Kuwait.
In Poland, he also worked with AZS Yawal Częstochowa (Polish Champion in 1992/93) and Warka Czarni Radom (PZPS Cup in 1999).
In 2003–2006, he was the head coach of Pamapol AZS Częstochowa, leading the team to one silver and two bronze medals.
In 2007, he coached AZS Politechnika Warszawska.
Awards and accolades
Edward Skorek is a Distinguished Sports Champion, who received the Golden Medal for Outstanding Sporting Performance three times and was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
The Przegląd Sportowy daily listed him twice among the top ten athletes in Poland − in 1974 and 1976, ranking him 10th and 7th, respectively.
